Participation in team sports not only helps children improve fitness and social skills; it’s also linked to the development of the hippocampus region of the brain (Biological Psychiatry:Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuroimaging 2019)

In adults, lower hippocampus volume is associated with depression.

It was found that involvement in sports, but not non-sports activities like music or art, is related to greater hippocampus volume in boys and girls AND reduced depression in boys.
